WayForward is developing Yars Rising, a metroidvania based on Atari's Yars' Revenge

The original Yars' Revenge was released in 1982 for the Atari 2600. It was played as a single-screen shoot 'em up game, where players controlled an insectoid named Yar to destroy a boss named Qotile.

The new game, called Yars Rising, is set in the same universe but offers a completely different side-scrolling metroidvania experience. Players take on the role of a young hacker named Emi Kimura, who is hired by a mysterious patron to infiltrate the mysterious Qotech Corporation. The game involves running, jumping, sneaking and hacking your way through challenges to uncover layers of intrigue and solve a sci-fi mystery.

WayForward, known for 2D side-scrolling action games and sprite-based characters, is developing Yars Rising. Their notable titles include the Shantae series, River City Girls, Mighty Switch Force, DuckTales Remastered and Contra: Operation Galuga. Atari President and CEO Wade Rosen expressed confidence in WayForward's ability to revive the Yars franchise, stating that fans will enjoy a dynamic new chapter in the Yars story.

Yars Rising releases in late 2024 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch, PS4, Xbox One, PC and Atari VCS.
