The Case of the Golden Idol, last year's treat in the murder mystery genre, left a deep impression, and today developer Color Gray Games announced during The Game Awards 2023 event a sequel called The Rise of the Golden Idol, a deductive adventure that will be available for PC and consoles next year.

300 years have passed since the series of tragedies befell the Cloudsley bloodline. Stories of the iconic Golden Idol have all but become myths and legends. Those who once coveted the Idol and the supernatural power it possesses are gone - but not entirely forgotten. While the rest of the world is distracted by the lights and music of the 1970s, a tenacious relic hunter listens to the whispers of stories rarely told of an artifact that can reshape the world.

The new Golden Idol continues the phenomenal art of the series, where instead of a pixel-centric style, this new game looks like a painting brought to life. A significant change from the previous game is that The Rise of the Golden Idol moves away from the 18th century setting and instead moves to a more modern time period, taking players back to the 1970s. In this modern context, players will be challenged to solve 15 new cases of “crime, death and corruption”.

You must uncover a great mystery that takes place in the age of hallucinogens, fax machines, parapsychology and TV guides. Enlightenment seekers, convicts, show hosts, and corporate middle management will all play a key role in the larger mysteries that unfold as you progress. As always, many of these entities will have their own motivations, with some carrying burdens outside of normal daily agendas.

There is currently no release date for The Rise of the Golden Idol, but it will be coming to PlayStation, Switch, Xbox, Steam and mobile via Netflix sometime next year.
