One-Thousand Cuts, Banjo Toad Studio's debut game, is a challenging 2D side-scrolling action game that draws inspiration from Japanese history and folklore heritage. The game stands out with a strong design emphasis on simple but satisfying combat, deeply thought-out choices, and lore-rich storytelling.

This is a game that combines a retro aesthetic with the Edo period – each frame is hand-animated in a traditional pixel-art style, combining elements of Gameboy-era games with traditional Ukiyo-e woodblock prints. With the planned Kickstarter campaign which starts in April 2024, a full release is expected in early 2025.

Engage in instant-death combat using unique abilities and face environmental hazards to defeat your opponents. Strategize for effective solutions or face them with force as you fight your way through an army of a thousand enemies. Based on the one-hit kill concept, the game has no health bars, cooldown system, stamina, RPG-style modifiers or random damage.

Discover and face a dangerous collection of legendary warriors on your journey. Master different martial arts styles to unleash powerful martial techniques against your enemies. Defeating story bosses unlocks unique special techniques like Tsuki Thrust and Kuroko Grapple, which you use to progress through the story.

Demo version of this game on Steam offers 60-90 minutes of gameplay with a short tutorial, plenty of exploration, including over a dozen hidden cats to pet, bonus lore to discover, three additional modes available in the menu, an optional boss, unlockable upgrades, a three-phase final boss and multiple endings depending on the moral path you choose.
