Cooperative dungeon-crawler Rotwood reached more than 28 thousand concurrent players

The developer behind the popular game Don't Starve, Klei Entertainment, has recently launched its newest title, Rotwood, an action dungeon-crawler with roguelite elements. Typically, Klei Entertainment launches its games in early development stages. However, Rotwood has sparked mixed reactions among players, despite its very reasonable pricing.

Released on April 24, Rotwood combines the camera angle characteristic of the Beat 'em up genre and a combat system, in which players fight against corrupt beasts using various weapons and skills. In the first 24 hours of its release, the game peaked at 28,595 concurrent players, making it the third most popular game in Klei Entertainment's portfolio according to data from SteamDB.

Currently, Rotwood has a “mixed” rating on Steam, with 68.27% of 1344 user reviews being positive, while 566 are negative. Most players praised the vivid cartoon graphics, fun combat, challenging boss fights, variety of enemies, and the ability to customize characters. However, the main problem that players point out is the need to grind too much to upgrade weapons and armor. Some have also expressed the opinion that the Early Access version feels like an older playtest that hasn't been improved enough.

Klei Entertainment, founded in 2005, gained popularity with side-scrolling games such as Shank and Mark of the Ninja. However, the studio gained even greater fame due to the survival titles Don't Starve and Oxygen Not Included. After Tencent acquired a majority stake in the company, Klei was able to expand his reach to Chinese audiences when he obtained the license to release Don't Starve in that country two years ago.

The studio plans to collect player feedback for Rotwood, release new content and add support for multiple languages, and the Early Access period is expected to last one to two years.
