If Minecraft and Astroneer had a baby, you'd get PlanetSmith, a sandbox game set on spherical worlds that currently provides exploration and creative building. Minecraft, because it offers a similar aesthetics in blocks and the way of building, and Astroneer because it offers a similar atmosphere, music and appearance of the worlds. The voxel worlds are procedurally generated, which means that every new adventure will not be the same and the essence of this game is relaxation, that is, there are no enemies or objectives. However, the demo version was quite disappointing, I expected more, and we got the bare minimum. It should be noted that the demo version will be available during the Steam Next Fest in February.

Without further ado, PlanetSmith truly has beautiful graphics. The light, the look of the biomes, the details and the general atmosphere all fit together very well. Additionally, the classical music within the game can truly lull you to sleep, and the blocks we use look smooth and polished. From biomes we can find cold tundras, scorching equatorial deserts, grassy plains, wooded islands, seas and oceans.

It is very good that the game offers us a lot, but it all seems quite empty. There are no animals or any creatures, water doesn't exist inside the game at all, it looks like a transparent surface and maybe the worst thing is that we can only use 100-130 blocks inside the demo version. These blocks are actually hexagons, not squares like, for example, in Minecraft.

Developers want to develop this game together with the community: “Being a procedural sandbox game it makes sense that we let players play and give us feedback on the building side of the game letting them tell us features and blocks that they want to build with. While this happens we will be crafting the survival mode and after that a multiplayer mode."

The demo version is mostly limited to creative mode and is reduced to creative expression instead of survival. Personally, I'm not the type of gamer to spend hours building something, but that's why I'll be eagerly awaiting the full version of this game. Developers from Incandescent Games promise that in the early access phase, which will last several years, various elements will be added:

  • Survival elements
  • Crafting tools, weapons and equipment
  • Farming
  • Animals & Monsters
  • Fights againts bosses
  • Space Exploration
  • Alien World
  • Multiplayer

If games like this are your cup of tea, then you won't go wrong with PlanetSmith. It is still an impressive project, and we should see what will become of it at the end of this year. Early Access versions can always drag players away, which might be the case with this game. However, considering that the demo version does not provide us with much content, the question is how many players will be willing to try this game.
