Penny's Big Breakaway is a colorful platformer from the developers of Sonic Mania

Penny's Big Breakaway, the upcoming 3D platformer from the developer behind the 2017 hit Sonic Mania, is set to release in early 2024. A new trailer, unveiled during the PC Gaming Show: Most Wanted, provides additional insight into the game, including several of its main characters.

Penny's Big Breakaway looks like it will draw inspiration from classic platform games, putting you in the colorful pants of the main character to explore colorful worlds and collect items. But its key feature is Penny's semi-sentient yo-yo, which has multiple uses as a weapon, swing rope, vehicle or makeshift helicopter.

You'll mostly be using that yo-yo to avoid a small army of penguins sent your way by the barefoot Emperor Eddie. Apparently, he wasn't too happy with Penny's audition for court jester, so he ordered his non-flying followers to capture you. It's up to you to clear Penny's name as you unravel the mystery of what turned your ordinary yo-yo into a voracious, snack-eating creature.

The other characters you'll meet and fight in indoor arenas make up a diverse group: Sailor Sheila with Fangs, Flying Mr. Q, Puppeteer Tabu, and Judge Rufus with a Gavel. This game is being developed by Evening Star, a new studio founded by former members of the team that worked on Sonic Mania, one of the most well-received Sonic games.

Penny's Big Breakaway will be out for PC via Steam Early Access.
