According to the data shared by the portal Game World Observer, on SteamDB you can read that a total of 14,423 new games were published on the Steam platform this year, which is 14.5% more than the previous year.

Not surprisingly, October recorded the highest number of new releases with 1,320 published titles, followed by August with 1,285 and March with 1,270 releases. Over the past five years, the number of new games on Steam has grown continuously at an average annual rate of 10.5%. The only exception was in 2019, when a decrease of 8.6% compared to the previous year was recorded.

The year 2023 was marked as a record for Steam in terms of the number of simultaneous players who were active on the platform. Thus, on March 26, as many as 33,598,520 users were present on the platform. Already on January 8th, the threshold of 10 million active players in a single game was crossed, and Steam has exceeded that limit three more times this year, reaching a peak of 10,389,646 players in December.

The Singleplayer tag dominated on Steam, used in 12,089 games. Following categories are Indie (9.3k), Casual (8.8k), Action (8.5k), Adventure (8k), 2D (6.4k), Simulation (5.5k), 3D (5.3k), RPG (5.2k) and Strategy (4.8k). In this year, 2462 new editions were marked "Early Access", which represents a growth of 35% compared to 2022. Interestingly, the number of Early Access titles is increasing faster than the total number of new games on Steam.

The most played new games of 2023

Game World Observer found that the most played new games this year according to players who played a game at the same time are: Hogwarts Legacy (879,308), Baldur’s Gate 3 (875,343), Sons of the Forest (414,257), Starfield (330,723), The Finals (242,619), Lethal Company (240,817), Resident Evil 4 (168,191), Armored Core VI (156,171), Remnant II (110,856), Cities: Skylines II (104,697), Party Animals (104,174), Dave the Diver (98,480), ARK: Survival Ascended (98,047), BattleBit Remastered (87,323), Football Manager 2024 (86,900), EA Sports FC 24 (82,287), Payday 3 (77,938), Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty (75,906), Overwatch 2 (75,608), Street Fighter 6 (70,573).

No new game reached 1 million active players this year, unlike in 2022, when the free-to-play MMORPG Lost Ark peaked at 1,325,305 active players. Three new releases managed to break into the 20 most played Steam games of all time: Hogwarts Legacy (#9), Baldur's Gate 3 (#10), and Sons of the Forest (#20). It's also worth noting that only 132 games have ever had more than 100k players on Steam.

Of the top 20 titles, four were developed by independent studios: Baldur's Gate 3, Sons of the Forest, Lethal Company and BattleBit Remastered. Some might argue that BG3 doesn't fall into this category due to budget, team size, and other factors, but Larian Studios is still an independent company. Seven games are new IPs: Starfield, Lethal Company, Party Animals, Dave the Diver, BattleBit Remastered, and Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty. The rest of the titles in the top 20 are either based on major franchises or sequels to successful series (or both).
