Solo developer TYB Games revealed that Covert Crew, a 2D strategy RPG inspired by old classics with a modern twist, will release for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X/S and PC via Steam sometime this year.

At its core, Covert Crew offers strategic turn-based, grid-based battles, and stays true to its traditional tactical RPG roots while introducing new elements to keep the experience fresh and exciting with intense boss fights. You can recruit from a wide range of 20 superheroes, each with unique powers and abilities. This diverse roster ensures that each battle can be approached with a unique strategy, making each playthrough different.

One of the standout features is the "quips" system in battle, which improves synergy between heroes. Furthermore, by increasing synergy, you unlock new bonding scenes and combat bonuses, all to add depth to the characters' fights and relationships. Your power is your weapon - equip power modulators to modify attacks, increase speed or add status effects. As the game progresses, you can unlock and craft new modulators, which later provide endless customization options.

Instead of the traditional triangle of weapons, use five types of power in Covert Crew: energy, elemental, spatial, physical, and mystical. This system introduces a new layer of strategy as you must consider the strengths and weaknesses of each type of power in combat. In addition to the usual movement and attack actions, characters can use unique abilities that can affect battles in a variety of ways, including enhancements, removal of negative effects, and terrain control.

For those looking to train their heroes, the battle simulator offers a roguelike-inspired mode with procedurally generated maps, an expansion system, and blueprints to unlock new modulators and skills. Additionally, Covert Crew draws inspiration from games like Fire Emblem and Shining Force, which is evident in the strategic combat and character development systems. At the same time, the influence of the Marvel Universe and The Boys is noticeable in the game's narrative and character design, which combine superhero elements with a darker, more mature tone.
