How Escape Simulator sold 2 million copies

Share:

In its latest newsletter, GameDiscover.co revealed that the unique cooperative escape room game for PC, Escape Simulator, has reached a milestone of 2 million copies sold. Additionally, they shared insights into the regions where the game garnered the most player engagement and sales success. Currently priced at €15, the game has successfully secured collaborations with Portal and Among Us.

Escape Simulator has performed admirably on Steam since its launch in October 2021, attributed in part to the developers' proactive and generous support. The developers have also shared details about the regional distribution of Escape Simulator sales. North America represents 35% of total units sold, followed by Asia with 23.3%, Western Europe with 20.4%, Latin America with 6.6%, and the remaining regions comprising the rest of the distribution.

Escape Simulator Reviews
Only 12 thousand reviews have been left on the Steam page of this game

Why are there so few reviews? Pine sensibly suggested that it boils down to “different genres have different profiles of players who are more likely to review.” In particular, since this is a co-op game, many players invite friends who are casual players and probably don't want to review the game extensively. The full DLC list for Escape Simulator includes three paid DLCs (Steampunk, Wild West and Magic) at a price of €4.99 and two free ones, with an IP license (Portal and Among Us).

“We made the DLCs free because our goal is to reach new players. They still need to own the game to play the free DLC. This does not create additional costs for our existing players, but encourages them to return to the game and share their experience," said Pine Studio. Overall, the impression we get is that the team behind Escape Simulator has created a successful platform for escape room games, that is, it has achieved significant success and is not necessarily focused on aggressively increasing revenue.

A big contribution to this success lies in the Steam Workshop, which allows players to create their own challenges and rooms. Pine Studio concluded that the presence of player-created content encourages them to develop even better quality paid DLCs, since they are now faced with competition.
